Science Fair Winners: The following students placed first in their various divisions at the 2012 Georgia Tech Savannah Regional Science and Engineering Fair awards ceremony Thursday evening at the Coastal Georgia Center:
Jacqueline Cason – winner of the US Army Corps of Engineers Award, Junior Division, and the Best in Category for engineering: Materials and Bioengineering, Middle School Division, for her project on the hardness of wood. Because Jacqueline’s project is a “best in category,” she will represent OCS in the state science fair in Athens in late May. She also won $100 in prize money.
Parker Bass – winner of the American Chemistry Association Award, Middle School Division, for a project on which ink fades the fastest. He was presented $150 in prize money.
Casen Connell – Georgia Tech Award of Excellence in Engineering and Electrical and Mechanical Materials, Middle School Division, for a project on citrus power. He won $50 in prize money.
Peaking At The Right Time: The 2012 basketball regular season will be over tomorrow with the final regular season game being played at the Temple of Glory Church against Garrison K-8 School. I have had the distinct privilege to watch many of the games this season. The game against Godley Station last week was a positive sign that both teams (girls and boys) are peaking at the right time going into the tournament. There were a couple of things that really stood out in the games last week. It is very apparent that both teams are well coached and that we have the potential to make a great showing during the tournament. I was really impressed with how both teams conducted themselves on the floor. Our girls and boys have represented Oglethorpe Charter School quite respectfully this season. There was a time in the early years at OCS that our basketball teams had difficulty competing with the ending result of many games being a lopsided score. Not only are the girls and boys competing in every game and winning a lot, they are a class act on and off the floor. I would like to say a big thank you to Coach Gallman, Coach Fenning, Coach Richards and Coach Case. As with any season in any sport, the road to success does not come easily. Our boys team could have easily folded after some mid-year adversity. They chose to take a different path and put together one of their better efforts against a good Godley Station team. I would like to thank all of our parents, Coach Case, Coach Gallman and our student athletes for coming together as a family would do the night prior to the Godley Station game and turning this basketball season into a great experience for all. It sure would be nice to have a large crowd of supporters at the game tomorrow!
Great job, Melanie Robinson and Cynthia Smith: There are those rare occasions when extra curricular school programs cause you to step back and really take notice. Our Oglethorpe Cheerleading squad under the leadership of Melanie Robinson and Cynthia Smith has done just that. I have had more than a few people comment about this class act of cheerleaders who represent OCS. As we are approaching the end of their season, Ms. Saxon made the comment at the Godley Station game that this is the best group of middle school cheerleaders that she has ever seen. Mr. Brantley (Jackson Brantley’s dad) made the same comment during the same game. The resource officer and Principal at Derenne Middle School made the same comment 2 weeks ago. I have enjoyed watching people entering the gym at the various venues we play at. Rather than look up at the score board or for their seating location, they tend to direct their focus towards our OCS cheerleaders. We have on average triple the number of cheerleaders than the other schools. Our girls are loud! I mean really loud. They are together in sequence with everything that they do. Please make every effort to come see these young ladies tomorrow at the Temple of Glory for their last home game performance.
