Discipline Policy
|
|
Student Discipline is tracked by semester (1st semester = 1st
and 2nd marking periods and 2nd semester = 3rd
and 4th marking periods). After the first semester, each student will
start a new DDB. The administration reserves the right to require
mandatory site visits and/or phone conferences with students and their parents who
have been tracked in the DDB beyond a Level 3 consequence in
a given semester or school year. Student DDB information from
first semester will be kept on file for review, if necessary, throughout second
semester.
Our goal is to foster self-discipline and respect for others. Students are given
a number of opportunities to correct behavior. The administration holds the right
to assign any level of detention or suspension depending on the nature of the incident.
Students are constantly informed and reminded of the class rules and expectations
on a regular basis.
Team Level Detentions:
Level 1 Lunch Detentions – Student will serve a maximum of 3 silent lunch
detentions either in the cafeteria or in an isolated classroom.
Level 2 After-school Team Detention and Parent/Guardian Contact – Student
will serve an after-school detention with a teacher on the team. One week prior
to the detention, the student will complete an action plan with their assigning
teacher. Parents will be contacted by the assigning teacher within 24 hours of the
team referral.
Level 3 After-school Assistant Principal Detention and Team Parent/Guardian Conference
– Student will be assigned an after-school assistant-principal detention. Parent/Guardian
and student will attend a 20 minute mandatory SST site visit
conference on the 3rd Tuesday of the month with the student’s grade
level DTL and AP. The grade level
DTL will contact the parent/guardian to inform them of the schedule conference
date.
Office-Level Administrative Detentions:
Level 4 Office- A 1st office-referral detention will result in
the student losing all extracurricular privileges for four (4) weeks. A parent/guardian
contact from the AP will take place. If necessary, the student
will serve an in-school detention until the parent/guardian is contacted.
*Level 5 Second Office- referral Detention and Parent/Guardian Contact –
A 2nd office-referral detention will result in the student losing all
extracurricular privileges for nine (9) weeks. A parent/guardian conference
with the AP will take place. If necessary, the student will serve
an in-school detention until the parent/guardian is contacted. Interventions may
be established by the AP and/or the grade level discipline team
leader for end of the semester activities and/or good behavior field trips for students
who do not have any Level 6 or Level 7 suspensions in the DDB that
are directly associated with specific Level 6 or Level 7 violations.
*Team Detention: AP and office-referral detentions may
be held on the 3rd Tuesday of the month from 2:45 – 3:20 p.m.
The administration reserves the right to assign detentions for any day of the week
or change the method by which a student will serve their consequence. Examples include
but are not limited to a student loss of dress down, inability to attend the club
of their choice or inability to participate in fun-day activities.
**Office Referral Detention: A student serving an office referral detention
may include homework assignments connected to their violation, supervised work detail
during the after-school detention or non-participation in field trips or field day/fun
day activities. If a student misses an assigned AP or office-referral
detention, the student must make up the detention the following week. If a student
misses the make-up detention, he or she will be tracked in the next available space
on the DDB entry. Parents must contact the office receptionist if
their child is unable to attend an assigned detention.
Suspensions:
Level 6 Suspension – After two (2) office-referral detentions,
the next incident will result in an out-of-school suspension. The number of days
will range from 1-3, depending on the nature of the incident. More than one suspension
for the semester will result in a review of the student/parent/guardian contract,
and discipline folder along with the possibility of a recommendation being made
to the Governing Board and Principal by the AP requesting the
immediate removal of the student from Oglethorpe Charter School.
Level 7 2nd Suspension – The 2nd suspension will result
in an automatic 4 – 10 day suspension depending on the nature of the incident.
Note: It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian of the suspended student
to pick up missed schoolwork during the suspension. Please call the receptionist
in advance to arrange for work to be collected for pick-up. More than one (1) suspension
in a semester will result in an administrative review of the family , student contract
and the student's discipline folder, with a possibility of a referral being
sent to the Governing Board for further action. Immediate removal from school is
a possibility.
Progressive Discipline Suspension Procedure:
The following procedure will be followed by the AP when a student
is suspended:

mails a code of conduct and/or discipline policy non-compliance letter to the parent/guardian
informing them that they must appear before the Governing Board for a review of
discipline records with a recommendation being made for immediate removal, or the
student to not receive an re-enrollment packet.
Understanding the Discipline Database (DDB) Tracking Procedures:

the consequences administered by either the assigning teacher, the student’s grade
level DTL, and/or AP using step (d
and e) listed above.
Note: Anytime a student receives a Level 4 – Level 7 DDB
entry, the AP will provide the parent/guardian with a copy of
the violation and consequence within 24 hours. If parents are unsure of how to read
the DDB entry form, please contact the AP and/or
the student’s grade level DTL.

Prior to re-enrollment, the AP will annually review the complete

Board. A student re-enrollment packet can be revoked if a student who enters the

re-enrollment packet has been issued. The parent/guardian will receive notice of
any changes in their child’s re-enrollment packet and will have the opportunity

is a change in their child’s attendance status. The Governing Board will make the
final decision on the student who is under review for the following semester or
the next school year.
Governing Board Review Process:
Prior to the Governing Board making a decision on whether or not a student should

to the student and/or parent/guardian that can help the Governing Board reach a
decision such as the parent/guardian’s ability to partner with their child’s grade
level team leader, DTL and/or administration. More than one (1) suspension
in a semester will result in an administrative review of the student/parent/guardian
contract, with a possibility of a referral being submitted to the Governing Board
for further action. Immediate removal from school is a possibility.
Automatic Governing Board Discipline Referral:
- Misbehavior has caused a student or parent/guardian to be physically removed from
the school grounds, the classroom, and/or off-campus activity at the request of
the administration or supervisor in charge of students.

semester or school year.

that threatens their ability to teach, learn or feel safe as verified by the
AP or administration.

student under review for the next school year. If a student accumulates
the established number of detentions or suspensions after April 1st,
the parent/guardian will be notified and re-enrollment will be pending until further
review by the Governing Board. Students may not be re-enrolled who fail to meet
any of the conditions include in the family contract, including classroom performance.

student resides. A student who is suspended or expelled from a charter school as
a result of a disciplinary action taken by a charter school shall be entitled to
enroll in a local school within the local school system in which the student resides,
if, under the disciplinary policy of the local school system, such student would

Re: ___________________________
Dear Mr. /Mrs. /Ms.: ___________________________________________
Your child has accumulated at least one office referral detention, or at least one
suspension or a combination of detentions or suspensions that requires his or her
grade level discipline team leader and the Assistant Principal to request the Principal,
Mr. Kevin Wall to forward your child’s behavior folder to the Governing Board.
In accordance with the student handbook code of conduct and the discipline policy,
any student who either enters the school year under an administrative contract or
has accumulated 2 or more office-referral detentions, more than 1 suspension, or
a combination of 1 detention and 1 suspension in a semester will be subject to an
administrative review of your child’s behavioral record. As part of the family contract
signed by you and your child, it states, “failure of parent/guardian and/or student
to meet contractual obligation after repeated requests will require the governing
board to determine if a re-enrollment packet will be issued to your child for the
next semester and/or the following school year”. Specifically, if a student and/or
parent violates the student behavior or family contract after April 1st, the student/parent/guardian
will be notified and a re-enrollment packet will be pending until further review
by the Principal and the Governing Board.
During the review process, there is a possibility the Governing Board will approve
further disciplinary action against your child and/or his or her immediate removal
from Oglethorpe Charter School. At your request, our office receptionist will prepare
a copy of your child’s discipline referral record that has negatively affected your
child’s opportunity to learn and/or the learning, safety and well-being of others.
(Please allow 24 hours for the discipline referral records to be processed for pickup
by our administrative secretary).
Note: **O.C.G.A. 20-2-2066 (c): A student may withdraw without
penalty from Oglethorpe Charter School at any time and enroll in another local school
in the school district in which such student resides. A student who is suspended
or expelled from Oglethorpe Charter School shall be entitled to enroll in a local
school within the local school system in which the student resides, if, under the
disciplinary policy of the local school system, such student would not have been
subject to suspension or expulsion (See Student Handbook, or visit our website
http://oglethorpecharter.org/StudentUnion/StudentsInfo.aspx).

OCS Bus Safety Violation Report/Bus Contract
Know the Rules...
For Going To and From School Safely

Every year children take to the streets of Georgia to get to and from school. Every
year there are reports of suspicious adults approaching our children while walking
to or from school or waiting at the school bus stops. For that reason it is important
that children understand the safety rules. Please take time to go over these safety
tips with your student that will help them develop safety skills.
- ALWAYS TAKE A FRIEND when walking to and from school. It’s saferand
more fun to be with your friends.
- WALK in well-lighted areas and NEVER take shortcuts.
- STAY with a group while waiting at the bus stop.
- If anyone bothers you GET AWAY from that person and TELL an adult
as soon as possible.
- If an adult approaches you and asks for directions, help in finding a pet, or offers
you a ride, say NO.
- If someone follows you on foot, or in a car, GET AWAY from them as quickly
as you can. Go to the closest business or house and ask an adult to call 911
and wait for the police.
- If someone grabs you and tries to take you somewhere YELL and SCREAM “HELP”
or “FIRE” until the person lets you go.>
- ASK your parents to help you find the safest route to school or to your bus
stop.
The bus schedule (time, place, etc.) is given at the opening of school and published
in the local newspaper. Parents should contact the office immediately to report
a change of address. The change typically takes 3 to 5 business days to take effect.
Students experiencing problems on a bus should contact an administrator for help.
In order to make the buses as pleasant and as safe as possible, please follow these
rules:
- All rules of safety as designed by Laidlaw are to be followed.
- Stay seated at all times.
- Keep arms and head inside the bus window.
- Outside of ordinary conversation, classroom conduct is to be observed.
- Absolute silence is required at all railroad crossings.
- The driver is in full control of the bus and the students. Riders must obey the
driver.
- The driver may assign seats to promote order on the bus.
- Eating and drinking are not allowed on the bus. (Level 2)
- Stand away from the roadway while waiting for the bus.
- Wait for the driver's signal before crossing the road. Walk ten feet in front
of the bus.
- Bus riders must be on time. The bus cannot wait for those who are tardy.
- School and bus rules apply to behavior while waiting for and leaving the bus.
- Students are responsible for any damage to bus equipment.
- Do not throw anything from the bus.
- Electronic devices are not allowed on the bus.
Bus students reported for inappropriate behavior on the bus or while waiting for
or leaving the bus stop may be disciplined. Oglethorpe Charter School’s Code of
Conduct applies to all students riding buses, and students will receive sequenced
detentions relative to bus-incident reports.
Per Savannah Chatham County Public Schools and First Student: Students who
do not comply with behavior standards will have their privileges suspended and will
not have them restored until a parent/guardian meets with the Principal, signs a
behavior agreement.

stops.
- Students, who have the opportunity to ride school buses, may do so as long as they
display behavior that is reasonable, appropriate and safe.

Serious or repeated violations shall result in long term or permanent loss of bus
transportation privileges. Serious consequences shall apply for students who it
or bully anyone on the bus.
