All quiz questions will be based on the questions covered in the daily reading. Students have from 10 minutes a day in class to progress through the selected reading and questions (Reading Across the Curriculum). Please encourage your child to use that time wisely as they search for accurate answers. If your child works slowly, they should also spend an appropriate amount of time progressing through the assignment at home. It would also be a good idea to look over the material so they are familiar with where it is located in their notes and to determine if it is legible and makes sense.
Please review this homework site regularly for updates on what assignments have been given.

Adults, please check agendas daily for homework assignments, test dates and or grades.
Each sixth grader has been provided with a textbook to use at home as well one to be used in class. Please make sure your child leaves the checked out textbook at home until the time comes to return it in the spring. It should not be transported daily in your child’s book bag.
Have a great week!

Homework Assignment: Students are now going to enter into 7th grade material, more specifically, we are working on introducing the addition and subtraction of negative and positive integers. Our goal is to prepare the students for concepts they will encounter and have to master next year so that there is some bridging between this year and next. If mastery does not occur this year, before summer break, there will be at least some foundation of the concept laid in hopes of recognition and quicker understanding next year. See this site for explanation and reinforcement at home: http://www.helpingwithmath.com/by_subject/integers/int_adding_subtracting.htm

For homework, if students have not completed and submitted the tessellations assigned the past 2 weeks, they are to be returned by Friday for grading.

Prepare for the Roaring 20's, Great Depression, and culminating unit of World War II!

Terms/notes to know (from 5-15-12)
Armistice - 'cease-fire'. Germans ask for this, (11-11-11), 1918. November 11th, 1918
war reparations - Germany pays 33 billion for war damages, also accepts the war-guilt clause

Also - review your notes, map, and other handouts from class.

Nicknames
“World War I” – world-wide
“The Great War” – first of its kind, $ in cost & lives
“The War To End All Wars”
Immediate cause = assassination of Arch Duke Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary
Long term causes =
1.  Colonial Rivalries (G.B., Fr., & Germans had fewer)
2. Alliances
3. Nationalism & Militarism
Reasons U. S. Enters WWI
1.      Lusitania (British) – sunk by German U-boats (May 1915)
~1,200 died, 128 Americans

2.      Zimmerman Telegram (aka ‘the Zimmerman Note’) (March 1917)– Germany tried to get Mexico to turn on the U.S. & reward them with lost land from the Mexican War.

The Von Schlieffen Plan - Background - Franco-Prussian War, 1870. Germany beats France. Basic logic and instinct tells you to knock out France first, then focus on Russia in the east, who has more land and more men.
44 years later, Germany invades France through neutral Belgium (to avoid fighting a two-front war). Great Britain declares war on Germany, because they vowed to protest Belgium. Germany has now doubled their problem on the western front. Militarily = great plan. Politically = terrible/disaster.
